ghibli essays

just a bunch of thought dumps of why ghibli movies are awesome (warning: all pages will contain spoilers!!!)

My top 3

  • Castle in the Sky

My favorite Ghibli movie always comes down to Castle in the Sky. In addition to the fact that Pazu and Sheeta are extremely loveable, the film takes its audience on a beautiful journey discovering the lost civilization of Laputa. The pacing is really great and we really get to understand the characters and their motivations and values. It’s cruel when it needs to be, but ultimately instills hope in the audience through its comfort.

  • The Secret World of Arietty

The film grabs the attention of its viewers through the interesting lives of Arietty and her family having to take resources from the house belonging to humans as very tiny creatures. It appears to be a wholesome movie at first, but it actually explores deeper themes revolving life, death, and separation. The realistic portryal of such intricate topics is what easily makes this my second favorite.

  • Spirited Away

A classic, a little bit basic, but not for without a reason. The movie contains so many themes about maturing and growth without overwhelming the audience at all. Beautiful score, beautiful animation, and beautiful storytelling overall.
