I did see 叶麒圣 in another musical before this (see #33), but his performance in this was just stunning. I also fell in love with the second male lead….. he is such a good singer it was crazy. Even the more minor roles had pretty strong vocals and acting as well. The female lead was also crazy, her high notes were so stable that it was hard to believe that it was live. I usually don’t love the scoring in musicals in China, but the score was actually really beautiful in this musical. Instead of weird, random melodies, the songs in this musical actually were very catchy (I can still remember how they go) and they all fit their respective characters really well. The fucking encore was insane at the end and the actors had a lot of really cute interactions, and you can really tell that they love the show and what they’re doing so much. The only weakness might be the plot, which is not anyone’s fault really. The original author, Keigo Higashino, is kind of known for his crazy, unpredictable plots. While the story itself was interesting, the ending was a little underwhelming and didn’t really support some of the character development. It was still pretty enjoyable overall, and honestly I really think they should consider doing cast recordings for how good it was.
